Check out my visit to Kalsubai Trek, Highest Peak in Maharashtra.
Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra, it is 5400 feet high and it is located in the Sahyadri ranges. Trekking enthusiasts who stay in Mumbai and trek regularly are familiar with this destination. It offers spectacular view of bhandardara lake and some adventurous terrain for climbing. If you are planning for a trek there, then here’s my guide to Kalsubai trek – Highest peak in Maharashtra.
How do I reach Kalsubai Peak?
I highly recommend a private vehicle whether you are traveling alone or in a group.
Why you ask?
Well, this trek is very exhausting even if you are a pro. you will need time to recuperate once you have completed the trek and are back in the base village. Taking a taxi and a train after a grueling trek might frustrate you and turn you off from ever coming back.
Secondly, if you have a group of four or more you will end up spending the same amount. For four person group, it should cost Approx. Rs. 1200 per person. It would only go down if you add more members. Remember, this calculation is from Mumbai.
If you choose to travel by train then here’s how you need go…
Reach Kasara Railway Station
Take local Taxi till base village Bari
By Road Mumbai – Kasara – Igatpuri – Ghoti – Bari Village
Kalsubai Peak Trek from Pune By Road Pune – Sangamner – Rajur – Bhandardara – Bari
Kalsubai Peak Trek route is well marked
Local guides often accompany climbers to the summit
Local Villagers offer homestay and food option
Many restaurants are available till Bari Village

When you should visit…
When is the best time for doing this trek? Well, to be honest ‘when’ makes a huge difference.
Summer – Pros & Cons
If you visit in the summer (April to June) the trek is relatively easier and you can climb faster, if you have an early start (i.e 4:00 am) But if you start late, lets say by 11:00 or 12:00. You will have sun over your head and will feel exhausted very soon
Rainy season – Pros & Cons
Early September is the best time to trek on Kalsubai peak (I highly recommend it). I have been there twice, and both treks have been in the rainy season. At this time of the year, the weather on the top of the peak is very vibrant and is constantly changing. The mountain gets muddy and more challenging but not too rough for newbies. The weather is in constant flux as you climb higher, and once you get closer to the summit, a ghostly mist surrounds you as if you are in the clouds. The moment is very surreal. If you like adventure then you will love this trek in the rainy season
Things you need to carry, If you are planning a trip to the highest peak in Maharashtra…
Without proper trekking shoes you will slip and fall because of the muddy and rocky terrain.
Long pants –
No short pants, there are lot of mosquitoes so cover your legs.
Small backpack (Optional) –
Carry something light and comfortable to carry water.
Regardless of numerous stalls springing up between the trekking route you should carry a bottle of water. You never know when you might need it. DO NOT THROW WATER BOTTLES. Respect nature and keep it in your bag.
You can carry snacks or chips with you on the trek. You will get lunch or dinner in the base village ‘Bari’ but you have to inform them in advance before you start the trek so that they can prepare the food accordingly. Remember only authentic Maharashtrian home cooked food will be available in the village. If you are carrying food on the mountain, please DO NOT LITTER.
